An exciting new project is underway to establish a flagship community centre in the heart of Manchester.
The People’s Centre Project – a collaboration between the Manchester Trades Union Council and Manchester Unemployed Work Centre, working alongside the People’s History Museum and Manchester City Council – is currently exploring turning Trade Union Congress premises at 103 Princess Street into a centre providing a range of services and facilities serving the local community and supporting the local labour movement.
In the Project’s own words its objective is “to see 103 Princess Street retained for use by the Trade Union Movement and progressive forums in the city. Once established we want to see the People’s Centre play a major role in helping the voice of disadvantaged people and communities in Manchester be heard.”
We at the Greater Manchester Law Centre are proud to support the project and look forward to working with the committee in the future.
Current plans include many exciting proposals, including a trade union history research service where people can learn about Manchester’s proud tradition supporting the labour movement, a trade union information unit providing members of the public with vital information on trade unions and advice on employment issues, and a communications unit delivering an alternative to the mainstream media news. Proposals also include incorporating Manchester Trade Union Congress and Manchester Unemployed Work Centre offices and a café.
