On Sunday 20th May, a brilliant team of runners will be taking part in the Great Manchester Run to raise money for GMLC. See a selection of their stories and sponsor them below:
“GMLC, like many charities of its kind, provides free access to justice by advising, supporting & representing the most vulnerable through the benefits application & appeals system, to get their entitlement, to arm them with their rights & provide them with the legal advice required to bring them out of poverty & be able to build a better future. Unfortunately, like most charities, they rely on donations to keep going.
It’s an incredibly important cause – by supporting people in this way it helps to build a better society for all of us and it strengthens our local economies by way of improving individuals’ financial circumstances.
I am running the 10k GM run on Sunday 20th May to raise money for this cause. Please take the time to sponsor me. I know money is tight for most people so any little amount will help.” – Kate

“Legal aid has been shamelessly cut and cut again, and law centres over the country are becoming a rarity. GMLC enables the people of Greater Manchester to campaign for change as well as to start to provide access to free and independent legal advice and representation for people who could not otherwise afford it.
I have volunteered at GMLC for more than 2 years now and it has been amazing to help the law centre grow. GMLC has done lots of life-changing work in welfare benefit advice and appeals, employment, community care and housing – and all of it has been made possible by the generous donations and community support. Please help GMLC in the fight for free access to justice!” – Katrina

“There is a huge ever growing gap between those who have and those who have nothing. Injustice is massive, the poorest and most vulnerable are being left out to dry by a government set to grind people into debt, poor housing, insecurity and poverty.
Mistakes happen, but when it’s the DWP, the local authority housing benefits or homeless services – there are very few places available to go for advice, to be listened to and to be helped fight your corner.
The law centre offers support, answers, a solution, access to expert advice and representation – hope.
Please give generously if possible but anything at all will be appreciated. ” – Yasmin

“I’ve worked in the free advice sector in Greater Manchester for over 20 years, including work in services cut due to austerity despite the excellent outcomes they provided for vulnerable families and individuals.
Donating to Greater Manchester Law Centre allows them to continue their great work building a quality advice service in the city.
Making me run a bit in freezing weather is probably an added bonus… ” – Sean

In the fundraising lead, we have Glynis, who is fundraising to say thanks to GMLC founders and management committee for all their hard work.
“100 years ago some women got the vote….but….some women are still fighting for legal justice. [GMLC Management committee member] Norma Turner describes herself as a ‘back room girl’ at GMLC. Every £££ I can raise will go towards greater justice for people using the free services there.
My game plan is to do 10kms, walking, running, cycling, elliptical trainer, rowing for 60 days finishing on the 20th May at the Manchester 10k Run.”

We rely on donations and sponsorship to provide our essential services and to further our campaign for free access to justice. We are grateful for all the hard work of our supporters who raise funds for our survival.
